Luis Rocha's lab, the Complex Adaptive Systems and Computational Intelligence (CASCI) research group at Indiana University and the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia, works on complex networks & systems. We are particularly interested in the informational properties of natural and artificial systems which enable them to adapt, learn, and evolve. This means both understanding how information is fundamental for controlling the behavior and evolutionary capabilities of complex systems, as well as abstracting principles from nature to produce adaptive intelligent systems. This theoretical and applied research agenda focuses on tackling multi-level complexity involved in human health, and is organized in three main threads: complex networks & systems, computational and systems biology, and computational intelligence. Our group is seriously interconnected with other research groups and networks: The Center for Complex Networks and Systems (CNets), the Indiana University Network Science Institute, the Cognitive Science Program, the FLAD Computational Biology Collaboratorium, the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, the NOVA School of Business and Economics, and Centre de Physique Théorique at the Aix-Marseille Université.

Congratulations to CASCI member Rion Brattig Correia for successfully defending his dissertation entitled "Prediction of Drug Interaction and Adverse Reactions, with data from Electronic Health Records, Clinical Reporting, Scientific Literature, and Social Media, using Complexity Science Methods" on April 12th 2019. Rion was supervised by Luis Rocha and completed his PhD degree as an affiliate of the NSF-NRT Interdisciplinary training in Complex networks and Systems. Dr. Correia’s research used network science, machine learning, and data science to uncover population-level associations of drugs and symptoms, useful for public health surveillance. His findings show that Social Media (Instagram and Twitter) and Electronic Health Records of an entire city in Southern Brazil, are very useful to reveal how the Drug interaction phenomenon varies across distinct groups. For instance, he identifying gender biases and specific communities of interest in chronic disease (e.g. Epilepsy and Depression). In addition to Complex Networks and Systems, his dissertation contributes to the fields of biomedical informatics and precision public health by leveraging heterogeneous data sources at multiple levels to understand population and individual pharmacology differences and other public health problems.
